Sometimes, I have stinky pits. Yeah... I said it. From workouts to warm weather, it's difficult to stay super fresh when you're living an active lifestyle -- heck, it's the cost of getting out there and doing the damn thing. On the other hand, I'm a huge fan of smelling good -- and, since I'm pretty sure that my olfactory senses at baseline are the same as a pregnant woman (that's 10,000 times the normal smelling capacity), I work hard to keep myself from smelling oh-so-stanky.
Prior to my venture into the wide world of wellness, my primary concern was to minimize sweat and maximize delicious scents, which led me, over a matter of years, to trying out almost every major deodorant/antiperspirant on the market. I even tried out a prescription-strength antiperspirant (note: not due to being overly stinky, just sweatier than I would have wanted to be... have I said too much?).
But what that really means is that I have tried just about every brand of toxin -- all in search of the anti-stank.
From aluminum to parabens, THA to triclosan, conventional deodorants/antiperspirants are chock-full of toxins linked to cancer, kidney damage, thyroid disfunction, skin irritation and more. All wrapped up with a pretty, chemicalized scent.
And, let's face it, the "all-natural" deodorants just don't get the job done. I swear, with some of them, I'm pretty sure that I smell worse after application. Truth be told, there are a few quality brands out there -- the magic combination of both skin-friendly stink protection and natural ingredients, but they tend to be more expensive and hard to find!
Here's a recipe that you can make at home that's all-natural, easier, cheaper and just as effective! It's been tested and tweaked for optimum efficacy! Also, strong enough for active men and women.
DIY Deodorant aka "Magic No-Stinkys Potion"
2 TBSP Coconut Oil
1.5 TBSP Baking Soda
2 TBSP Shea Butter
2 TBSP Arrowroot
1. Combine Coconut Oil and Shea Butter in a glass mason jar with a lid and place in a small saucepan of lightly boiling water until melted.
2. Remove from heat and add baking soda and arrowroot. Mix well.
3. Add essential oils!** Mix well.
4. Pour into empty deodorant container or glass jar.
5. Cool completely in the fridge and apply daily! My sweetheart uses the deodorant container kept in the fridge, while I keep mine in a glass jar on the counter and apply with my fingertips. It's magic no-stinkys potion!
Keep in mind that the shea butter tends to smell strongly, so you're going to want to use enough to overpower the shea butter scent (about 10-20 drops). Remember to always use CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils for this -- they've gone through a rigorous third-party testing system to make sure they are pure enough for your skin!
The best oils for deodorant are:
Melaleuca (antibacterial/soothing for the skin), Lavender (calming/soothing for the skin), OnGuard (specially formulated to kill germs/maintain healthy bacteria), Lemon (purifying/antimicrobial), Purify (doTERRA's purifying blend)
Other good ones include: Lime, Geranium, Lemongrass and Thyme! Make yourself a blend and have fun with it! My deodorant is a delicious blend of Melaleuca, Wild Orange, Grapefruit, Lime and Ylang Ylang!
